Why we finally chose to lose weight (our essay)

WHY ARE WE INTERESTED? Ever since day one of the Biggest Loser, we have been sitting on our couches glued to the television watching the contestants become heroes right before our very eyes. We have laughed with them, cried with them and cheered them on. We’d think to ourselves “WOW, wouldn’t it be great if we could be on that show and change our lives too”. You’ll notice in the first sentence we wrote “sitting on our couches”. Yep, we’ve watched every season, but haven’t had the courage to get up and change our lives. That is until this challenge was announced. It was a call to action that resonated to the depths of our souls. WE ARE READY! We’re both in our 40’s and dealing with health issues: Kathy-cancer, Laurie-diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol. There is no better time than to do this. WHY WE SHOULD WIN: Because “2008 is our year to be GREAT!” We finally get it. We NEED to be in this challenge. We only live once and we want to live the best possible lives we can. We need to get healthy so we can not only add years to our lives, but add life to our years. OUR PLAN: This website will be instrumental in our success. We are no longer hiding anonymously, pretending as if we are okay. We are putting ourselves out there for the world to see. We are accountable for our actions here. Even on days when we can’t talk to each other, we can check up on each other on our blogs. If one of us is struggling, an encouraging phone call will follow. Our plan is simply this, eat less and move more. Most importantly be honest and be accountable. WE WILL SUCCEED…WE WILL BE HEROES TOO!

A little more about me (Laurie)

Well, here's the story in a nutshell. I'm a single mother of an adult son. I just turned 40 last year. I was diagnosed this past year with diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Luckily that has put the fear of God in to me. I have about 5 prescription that I have to take. However, with diet, exercise and losing weight, I should be able to get rid of some of those pills. My main reason for doing this is to lose weight and improve my health. There are so many things I would like to do, if only I had the energy and stamina to do them. I also want to set a good example for my son. I want to show him that his mom is not a quiter and that if I can do it so can he. He's a big boy and has been most of his life. He takes after his mother. I've been heavy most of my life. I just want to help/motivate him to make sure he doesn't have the same health problems that I have.

Kathy's story

I’ve been a yo-yo dieter for the past 25 years. Lose some pounds, gain that back plus some. But I’ve never been worried enough to really do anything about it. My ‘aha’ moment came in October of 2005; I was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. I found myself in a life or death situation. This leukemia had a sudden on-set, and needed immediate care. When I went into the hospital I had less than 4 pints of blood in my body. I was in pretty bad shape. I made the decision to think of this experience as if I had a bad cold or something. I couldn’t let myself go to that place of thinking that I could die. The mindset that I had in thinking about my illness, helped get me through it. Friends and family were amazed at my strength and courage. I went through 5 months of intravenous chemotherapy before being put on a two year maintenance treatment program. I currently take 3 different pills 2 of which are a mild form of chemotherapy. I endure an extremely painful bone marrow biopsy every 3 months. It really has been a lot to deal with. Outwardly to others and in my mind, it seems as if I have remained upbeat and positive throughout this experience, however, over the course of the last almost 2 ½ years, I have put on over 30 lbs of additional weight, so obviously I have been repressing some of my feelings about this. March of this year, I will be done with my maintenance program, no more drugs, no more surgeries. YAY! This Biggest Loser challenge came along at just the perfect time for me. I am a cancer survivor and now I’m ready for the next battle. I am ready to survive being overweight. Even though my cancer isn’t really diet related, I know that many types of cancer can be linked to diet. In addition, heart disease, stroke, diabetes etc.; these can all be related to poor diet and fitness. I’m pushing 50 years old. It’s time to be done with this nonsense and to get fit and healthy. Thanks Biggest Loser for the challenge, I’m ready to accept!

K's blog - March 11th: Here already...

WOW!  Time sure has flown by since we began this challenge two months ago.  That feeling is quite a contrast from how we felt when we began this challenge back in January.  Two months seemed like such a long time to commit to diet and exercise, at least for us it did.  But we told ourselves that two months would pass by regardless of whether or not we chose to make ourselves priority this year.  So we took the plunge and are so glad we did.

I am unbelievably proud of what Laurie and I have been able to accomplish as a team during this short period of time.  Laurie lost 12.4 lbs and I was able to lose 26.8 lbs for a team total of 39.2 lbs.  As a matter of fact, we are proud of what ALL the teams have been able to accomplish during this challenge.  We all need to give ourselves a well deserved back on the (MUCH smaller) back!

We are so thankful to MSN and the Biggest Loser for sponsoring this challenge.  It came along at such a perfect time for us.  We plan to keep working hard until we reach our ultimate goals.  We will become fit and more importantly we will become healthy.  This challenge has been the perfect springboard for our future, which holds many great things for us as we work towards gaining our health back.

We have been inspired by so many of you out there.  We appreciate all the kind words that you have sent our way.   We have been mesmerized by the creativity that many of you have displayed in creating your web pages.  We are truly in awe of your talent.  This was our first time in creating a webpage and we were a bit intimidated by the process at first, but eventually we were able to come up with something that has been a great help to us.  Our web page has been such a great tool in helping us to be accountable to something larger than ourselves; the Million Pound Matchup Community.  The web pages that all of you created were not only creative, but being able to read about the struggles and triumphs of others has been pivotal in our success.  We have learned many helpful tips, found fabulous new recipes, and fun ways to exercise at work, just to name a few.  Thanks so much to all of you!

K's blog - Y finale

Well, the Y challenge is officially over.  I ended up losing 26.8 lbs for a total percentage loss of 10.75%.  I am so thrilled.  My goal was to lose 10% by the end of the challenge and I was able to surpass that goal.  As of the numbers from a week ago, I managed to move myself up to 12 place on the leaderboard.  I won't know where I ended up officially until March 22nd, when they announce the results.

Ending results (Laurie's blog)

Well as you read from Kathy's blog, we didn't get to way in until Saturday.  After the weigh in I was a little upset with myself, I thought I had gained.  Once I looked at all of my sheets from the previous weeks, I saw that I hadn't gained, but I had lost.  I am officially down 10.6lbs.  Woo Hoo!  However, I am not down as far as I could have been.  This is just the beginning.  I'm hoping that without the pressures of making sure that I lose a certain amount every week or two weeks, that I will do better about not getting upset with myself.  I can take it slow and easy and not try to lose it all in a week.  Thanks for all the support and good luck to everyone.

K's blog - end of week 9

Normally on Fridays, Laurie and I would be logging our weigh-in numbers from the Y.  However this week, our weigh-in is going to be on Saturday instead of today as it is the finale of the Get-Fit Topeka Challenge.  It's been really great to work on both of these challenges at the same time.  I am so thrilled with the progress I have made thus far.  This time of year it is particularly hard for me to get motivated to exercise.  It's cold outside, so why bother?  Well this year, I'll be ahead of the game when spring does finally get here (it's SNOWING today!) after losing 10% of my starting weight.  Who knows how much more weight I would have gained over the past two months without this tool to help to motivate me.  I'll really be ready are raring to go when I can get outside, I'll really racked up the steps then.

As I mentioned last week, I had a bone marrow biospy on Tuesday, which did limit my movement substantially this week.  However, I'm pleased to say that I did manage to think ahead abit and walked extra over the weekend.  Here are my totals for last week

2/29 - 10,283
3/01 - 18,530
3/02 - 10,349
3/03 -  7318
3/04 -  3009
3/05 -  3829
3/06 -  4407

Wish us luck tomorrow, we'll let you know next week how we did!

K's blog - End of week 8

As you have read by now, my sister had quite a week.  My heart goes out to her.  It's so hard to make ourselves a priorty and to do the things necessary to make ourselves well, when there are so many outside influences that affect us everyday.  Laurie is such a caring person and was obviously devasted by the events that transpired last week.  But she was able to pick herself back up and get back on track by the end of the week.  I'm very proud of her.

As for me, I DID IT!!!!  I reached my goal of a 10% weight lost before the end of the challenge at the Y; I have lost 25.2 lbs as of this morning AND I still have one more week to go in the Y challenge and 11 more days until the end of this Biggest Loser challenge.  Now all I have to do is maintain through next week; of course losing a couple of extra pounds would be the icing on the cake.

Next week is going to be a bit of a challenge for me because I have a bone marrow biospy on Tuesday, which will seriously impede my ability to work out for the remainder of the week.  It's hard to just sit after one of those surgeries, let alone trying to get in serious walking.

Speaking of walking, my step count isn't too great this week.  One of the medicines that I have to take, I take on a quarterly basis (10 per day for 15 days).  Monday was day 1 of that prescription.  This medicine makes me feel quite hideous for several days until my body gets used to it.  Usually by the time that happens, it's time to quit taking it.  However, I did still manage to get in a short walk every day, so I'm happy about that.  Here's my step counts for this week.

2/22 - 7130
2/23 - 6214
2/24 - 7614
2/25 - 5146
2/26 - 6168
2/27 - 6302
2/28 - 7143

To all you Biggest Losers out there:  We're in the home stretch now and I'm sending good thought's everyone's way, so that we can all hit that finish line with a strong showing.  Of course many of us will continue on with our journey after this.  We have such a great start.  Good luck everyone, work hard the next 11 days.  WEIGH TO GO!!!
